Gerhard Werle

Gerhard Werle is Professor of German and International Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Contemporary Legal History at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He completed his doctorate and his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg. At present, Gerhard Werle is Director of the “African-German Research Network for Transnational Criminal Justice”, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst, DAAD).

He has been an Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape (Cape Town, South Africa) and Director of the South African-German Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice from 2008 to 2018. He is an Honorary Professor at North-West University of Political Science and Law (Xi’an, China) and has been a visiting professor at various universities worldwide, including Columbia Law School, New York; Kansai University, Osaka; University of Sydney; University of Technology, Sydney; University of Cape Town; and University of the Western Cape, Cape Town.

His habilitation study (Justiz-Strafrecht und polizeiliche Verbrechensbekämpfung im Dritten Reich, De Gruyter, 1989) was the first in-depth investigation into the criminal justice system of the Third Reich. He is the author of the first textbook on international criminal law to be published in German (Völkerstrafrecht, 5th edition: forthcoming 2019), which has been published in English (4th edition: forthcoming 2019), Spanish (3rd edition: 2017), Italian (2009), Chinese (2nd edition: 2017), and Russian (2011). Further works on international criminal law, transitional justice and modern legal history have been published widely in many languages.
